Kutch Rann Utsav Tour Package from Jodhpur

Kutch is Gujarat’s biggest district located right next to the Pakistan border. It has two salt deserts, including the Great Rann and the Little Rann of Kutch. During the monsoon, this land is submerged with seawater. When it dries up, it leaves a thick white layer of salt and that is what people come to see. The local Kutchi and Banni people live around this land and are known for their embroidery, mirror work, and music, all of which are performed during Rann Utsav.

The Rann Utsav is a winter festival in Kutch, Gujarat, where a plain white salt desert turns into a fair of music, dance, food and shopping. Many tourists from Jodhpur add this trip to their Rajasthan tour, as it is not too far and feels nothing like Rajasthan.

We have tried to cover every piece of information, including distance, dates, packages, tent prices, how to reach it and what to do there.

Jodhpur to Kutch Distance

Jodhpur to Kutch is about 650 km by road and it takes around 11 to 12 hours to reach there depending on the route and traffic. Bhuj is the nearest city to the Kutch Rann. From Bhuj, the festival venue at Dhordo is about 80 km further, which takes about 1.5 hours.

Rann Utsav is Celebrated in Which Month

Rann Utsav happens in winter. It usually starts in early November and goes on till the end of February or early March. It runs for almost four months, so you do not need to pick one exact date. Most people like to visit on full moon nights, since the white desert looks the best under a full moon. Gujarat Tourism announces the exact start and end dates every year, so check their website before booking.

What is the Great Rann of Kutch?

The Great Rann of Kutch

The Great Rann of Kutch is one of the world’s largest salt deserts. It covers about 7,500 square km in Kutch, Gujarat. It is not a sandy desert like the Thar. It is a dried-up wetland. For part of the year, it has shallow salty water. Once that water dries, it leaves a flat white layer of salt that goes on and on. At sunrise and sunset, it turns gold and pink. On a full moon night, it looks almost silver. The Arabian Sea is on one side and the Thar Desert is on the other.

What is the Story Behind the Rann of Kutch?

The Rann of Kutch was once a part of the Arabian Sea. This region has been cut off from the open sea by mud and silt from the neighboring rivers for many years. It became a shallow bay. Every year during the rains, this area got flooded with water, and sometimes sea water also came in. When the water dried up again and again, it left behind thick layers of salt.

There is a story that people tell in this area. A massive earthquake in 1819 altered the land here. It is said to have formed a long ridge called the “Allah Bund” that altered the way the water traveled into the area. Whatever the real reason, today this land looks like no other in India. And land and sea seem to have changed places.

What Happens in Rann Utsav, Gujarat?

Rann Utsav is like a temporary tent town built just for this festival. A tent city comes up near the White Desert at Dhordo. It stays open for close to four months every winter.

In the evening, there is folk music, dance, and Garba. There are shops selling Bandhani, Rogan art, mirror work, and other handmade items made by local artists. There are food stalls with Kutchi and Gujarati food. In the day, you can go on a camel ride, try an ATV, try paramotoring, or just walk on the white salt to take photos. The sunrise and sunset here are also very special. The Tent City also arranges trips to nearby places like Kala Dungar, Mandvi Beach, and Dholavira.

How to Travel from Jodhpur to Kutch Rann

By Road

The distance between Jodhpur and Bhuj is approx. 650 km by road and connected via national highways 25 and 27. It is about an 11 to 12 hour drive. The road is mostly in good condition. You pass towns like Barmer, Radhanpur and Samakhiali on the way, where you can stop for food or rest. Since it is a long drive, many people prefer to break the trip overnight instead of driving all in one go.

If you are travelling with family or a group, a tempo traveller hire in Jodhpur is a good and simple choice. It provides ample legroom for the long drive, room for luggage and is cheaper than booking many individual cars.

By Train

Jodhpur is connected to Bhuj by train, though on most routes you have to change trains, usually at Gandhidham or Ahmedabad. The Bhuj Jodhpur Express (14708/14707) runs on this route and is one of the more direct trains. It takes around 11 to 12 hours. You can also go via the Ranakpur Express or another train to Ahmedabad, and then take a train or bus onward to Bhuj. Since direct trains run only a few days a week, check the timing and book early during festival season.

By Air

The nearest airport to the festival is Bhuj Airport (BHJ). There is no direct flight from Jodhpur, so most people fly through Ahmedabad or Mumbai. The full trip, including the stop, takes about 4 to 5 hours. Once you land in Bhuj, the Tent City at Dhordo is about a 1.5-hour drive away, and cabs are easy to find outside the airport.

How Many Days are Enough for Rann of Kutch?

You should plan for a 3-night / 4-day trip to Rann Utsav. If your time is limited, the 2 nights/3 days option still covers the main parts, the Rann visit and one evening of the festival, but you will miss out on the nearby sightseeing.

Walk on the White Rann

One of the best feelings is to walk out onto the white desert of Kutch in the evening. The salt crunches under your feet, and as the sun goes down, the whole desert changes color. It is the most popular thing to do here, and most people say photos don’t fully capture how big and open it feels in person.

You can ride an ATV over the sand dunes close to the desert if you’re looking for a little adventure. If you’ve already spent some time strolling around at a leisurely pace, it’s an enjoyable, bumpy ride.
